Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he feels “proud and privileged” to have led Manchester United but admits he paid the price for failing to “take the next step.”
After an “embarrassing” 4-1 defeat against Watford in the Premier League on Saturday, Solskjaer was fired as United manager, with Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain the club’s top choice to take over next summer.
United have reported that Solskjaer’s assistant Michael Carrick would be selected interim manager till the end of the term, as well as appointing an interim manager till the end of the season.
“I want to thank the owners and the board for giving me the opportunity because it’s not for everyone, and I’ve had the chance,” Solskjaer stated on United’s website, speaking for the very first time since his departure.
“I feel much proud and privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead the club forward, and I sincerely hope to leave it in a better shape than when I arrived.”

It’s one of those things that you fantasize about doing in your life. After being a player and a reserve-team coach, the next job, the only dream you haven’t done, is to manage the club, which I have now.
“It’s been a blast, from the first to the last minute, so I have to thank all the players because they’ve been good boys and top people since I’ve been here.” Some have come and gone, but they’ve all been such a pleasure to work with.
“The board and the owners have supported me in bringing in excellent people and good players, and I believe, or know, that I will leave this club with a stronger squad.” Everyone knows I’ve given everything I’ve got for this team. I’ve made some excellent friends, reconnected with some old friends, and made some new friends among the new staff.
“With the fans, they’ve been great.” “With the other staff who was here when I was there, we’re close friends, and we’ve connected, and that’s what it related to a club like this. From the first day in Cardiff till the end. [They’ve been] at the top, and we’ll meet up again.”
