Canada defeats Mexico 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match in Edmonton thanks to two goals from Larin

Cyle Larin’s record-tying performance pushed Canada to a 2-1 win over Mexico at Commonwealth Stadium on Tuesday and put the Canadians in first place in their CONCACAF World Cup group.

That’s correct. As the eight remaining CONCACAF teams completed the eighth of their 14-game schedules in the Octagon, Canada (4-0-4) is in the first place, even though it hasn’t played in a World Cup since 1986.

The Americans have lost a point. The Mexicans and Panamanians are down two points. The top three teams qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the fourth-place team competes in an intercontinental playoff for a chance to qualify.

Larin’s two goals gave him a total of 22 with the national team, tying him with Dwayne De Rosario for the most goals in Canadian goal-scorer history.

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa only parried a skipping shot from Canadian defender Alistair Johnston just before halftime. The ball landed right in Larin’s path, and he made no mistakes.

After a wicked hop on the artificial grass, Johnston’s shot appeared to accelerate due to a smooth, cold ball on a hardened playing surface. According to Environment Canada, the game-time temperature was — 9 C, with a wind chill of — 14 C. That was the moment when Canada Soccer’s decision to hold the game in Edmonton on a November night was justified.

“The road games are incredibly challenging,” Canadian coach John Herdman said. “Everyone is going to exploit their terrain to their advantage.” “The games bring out our players’ Canadian side. “They were all raised on a synthetic pitch.”

Larin struck seven minutes again into the second half, this time side-footing in an inch-perfect cross from Stephen Eustaquio, leaving Ochoa beating on the goal line.
