Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on Hawaii and Travel Essentials

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, an actor and frequent traveller, gave us some travel tips.

Even the most ardent travellers these days would struggle to keep up with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson, who is one of the highest-paid actors in the world, appears to be on set all the time, from Atlanta to Oahu, and on red carpets from London to Los Angeles. He’s also in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, where he’s working on a new tequila brand called Teremana. Clearly, the mega-celeb is racking up plenty of frequent flier points. And it turns out that he’s picked up some useful tips along the way.

While on a rare holiday in Hawaii, Travel + Leisure (virtually) sat down with the “Red Notice” star. He discusses his favourite home state, as well as must-have travel items like face masks and fanny packs, in the video below.

Tell us about your Hawaii connection.

Dwayne Johnson: I’m Dwayne Johnson, and I’m “These islands are unlike any other. They’re still alive. And the mana is genuine – it is strong and potent. When you’re over here, you get lost in time. It’s a never-ending treadmill in New York and Los Angeles. However, when you come out here, you lose track of time. When it comes to the aloha spirit and all that entails, I’m a huge preacher.”

And to you it’s home?

“It’s always nice to return home. And I enjoy bringing folks here who have never been before – relatives and friends — and seeing how they respond when they step off the plane. Because it’s true: the mana, the aloha, and the spirit all hit you at the same time. You have a different drive, energy and motivation when you come down here and unplug — all coming from different places.”

“Is it then simply a coincidence that you’re usually filming out there?”

I’ve achieved a stage in my career where I can confidently suggest that we shoot in Hawaii [laughs]. It’s fantastic for the team. It’s a fantastic way to support the local economy. So, yes, I’ve worked on a lot of films in this town. I’d like to bring as much production as possible here. Hawaii has likewise performed admirably in the face of COVID.”
