Xi warns Biden about Taiwan, “Those Who Play With Fire Will Get Burned”

Following the summit, Chinese official media said that Xi warned Biden that supporting Taiwanese independence would be “playing with fire.”

Beijing, China:

At a virtual meeting aimed at establishing “guardrails” against the conflict between their competing superpowers, US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered stern warnings over the future of Taiwan.

A senior US source told reporters that the video-link conference, which took place late Monday in Washington and early Tuesday in Beijing, lasted “longer than intended.” “We had a respectful and straightforward discussion.”

While the goal was to calm an increasingly tense relationship between the world’s two largest economies and geopolitical adversaries, concerns over Taiwan, China’s self-governing democracy, loomed big.

Following the summit, Chinese official media said that Xi warned Biden that supporting Taiwanese independence would be “playing with fire.”

“Some in the United States want to ‘manage China by using Taiwan.’ This approach is quite dangerous; it is like playing with fire, and those who do so will be burned, “Xinhua news agency reported.

The White House response to the summit was more cautious, but Biden’s reaction against Beijing’s more aggressive posture toward Taiwan was obvious between the lines.

“On Taiwan, President Biden underscored that the US… strongly opposes unilateral moves to move ahead or threaten unity and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” according to a White House statement.

The statement reaffirmed US policy, which does not recognise Taiwan’s independence but supports the island’s defence.
