- Pool in Spa Total Fitness Centre shutting Sept. 1.
- William Calhoun operates a swim school at the Spa Total Fitness Centre pool.
The loss of a swimming pool in Charlottetown could impact the availability of swimming classes for numerous Islanders this fall, winter, and next spring.
The Spa Total Fitness Centre pool, located in the cellar of the Royalty Crossing Centre, will shut permanently on Sept. 1 due to mall renovations.
It dumps William Calhoun, who operates Mr. Bill Swim School at that pool, looking for a new area to train the backstroke.
“I think it’s a big loss, indeed, for the swimming classes when we lose that amount of area and capacity, that will have an effect, surely this time next year in the spring,” he said.
“But even in the fall and winter, we’ll have a substantial reduction in the number of lessons that will be able to be oriented in the Charlottetown region and in general.”
Calhoun is now looking for an area to hold lessons at hotel pools in the Charlottetown neighborhood. He stated that if he can’t find any, some hundred of his current students and any new customers may not get swimming lessons.
