Ahead of the Biden-Xi summit, the US warns China about pressure on Taiwan

Last month, China’s military made a record number of intrusions into the air defence zone of the island.

The US has cautioned China about its pressure on Taiwan, according to the State Department, as the two countries prepare for a highly anticipated summit.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and “expressed concern about the PRC’s ongoing military, diplomatic, and economic pressure on Taiwan,” according to a statement from the State Department.

U.s President Biden and Jinping will meet virtually Monday evening in Washington, D.C.

Blinken and Wang spoke on Friday about summit preparations, with the secretary “pressuring Beijing to participate in meaningful conversation to settle cross-Strait issues peacefully and in a manner consistent with the intentions and nice interests of the people of Taiwan,” according to reports.

Relations between the world’s two largest economies have worsened, partly because to Beijing’s claim to Taiwan, a self-governing democracy, but also due to trade, human rights, and other issues.

Last month, China’s military made a record number of intrusions into the air defence zone of the island.

In the face of what it has termed as Chinese aggression, Washington has consistently expressed its support for Taiwan.

According to the State Department, Monday’s summit “provides a chance for the two leaders to discuss how to responsibly manage competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China while cooperating in areas where their interests match.”

Biden and Jinping have spoken on the phone twice since the veteran Democrat took office. When Biden was Barack Obama’s vice president and Xi was Hu Jintao’s vice president, they spent a lot of time together.
